Sunsure Energy Secures ₹262 Crore for Tamil Nadu Solar Project

Sunsure Energy Secures ₹262 Crore for Tamil Nadu Solar Project

The Sunsure Energy Tamil Nadu Solar Project has secured ₹262 crore in project financing for a 75 MWp open-access solar facility at Ilayangudi. The financing represents another important development for India’s rapidly expanding Commercial and Industrial renewable energy market.

The funding arrangement brings together international development finance and domestic banking support. The financing is led by FMO, the Dutch entrepreneurial development bank, while Axis Bank has sanctioned approximately ₹71 crore as part of the overall funding package.

The transaction is particularly significant because it marks FMO’s first project financing participation in India’s Group Captive Commercial and Industrial renewable energy sector. The investment is expected to support the development and operation of clean energy infrastructure serving industrial and commercial electricity consumers in Tamil Nadu.

75 MWp Open-Access Solar Project in Ilayangudi

The 75 MWp solar facility is located at Ilayangudi in Tamil Nadu. It has been developed as an open-access solar project designed to supply renewable electricity to Commercial and Industrial consumers.

Under the open-access renewable energy model, eligible businesses can purchase electricity from renewable power producers. This model can help industries reduce their dependence on conventional grid electricity while supporting their sustainability and decarbonisation targets.

Tamil Nadu has a strong industrial base covering automotive manufacturing, textiles, engineering, electronics and other energy-intensive sectors. Therefore, access to reliable renewable electricity can play an important role in helping companies manage their energy transition strategies.

The Ilayangudi project adds further clean energy capacity to the state and demonstrates the increasing role of privately developed renewable power infrastructure in supporting industrial growth.

Financing Supports India’s C&I Energy Transition

The ₹262 crore financing package is an important example of growing lender confidence in India’s C&I renewable energy market.

Large renewable energy projects require significant long-term capital for construction, grid connectivity, equipment procurement and project development. Participation from both development finance institutions and Indian banks can support the expansion of commercially viable clean energy projects.

For Sunsure Energy, the financing also strengthens its ability to expand renewable energy solutions for business customers. The company has focused on supplying clean electricity to commercial and industrial consumers through solar, wind and other renewable energy solutions.

The financing structure highlights the growing maturity of the open-access renewable energy sector in India. As more businesses establish renewable electricity and carbon reduction targets, demand for scalable clean power solutions is expected to remain important.

Sunsure Energy Expands Renewable Energy Portfolio

The latest Tamil Nadu financing follows other debt funding secured by Sunsure Energy for renewable energy projects in India.

The company previously announced debt financing of ₹606.22 crore across multiple renewable energy projects. This included ₹461.76 crore for solar developments in Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh and ₹144.46 crore in refinancing support for a solar project at Augasi in Uttar Pradesh.

These investments have supported the company’s wider renewable energy expansion plans and its efforts to supply clean power to industrial customers.

Sunsure Energy has been expanding its project presence across several industrially important states, including Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Karnataka. This geographical expansion reflects increasing demand from businesses seeking renewable electricity solutions.

Why Open-Access Solar Matters for Industries

Open-access solar projects are becoming an important part of India’s corporate energy transition.

For eligible industrial and commercial consumers, renewable open access can provide access to clean electricity through long-term power supply arrangements. Depending on applicable regulations and project structures, businesses may also use these arrangements as part of their wider energy cost management and sustainability strategies.

Group captive renewable energy projects are another important segment of the market. These structures enable participating industrial consumers to access renewable electricity while complying with applicable ownership and consumption requirements.

The involvement of established financial institutions in this segment indicates increasing confidence in the long-term growth potential of C&I renewable energy projects.

Building a Larger Renewable Energy Platform

Sunsure Energy has been building a substantial renewable energy portfolio across India. Its development strategy includes large-scale solar and wind capacity serving commercial, industrial and utility customers.

The company has previously indicated ambitious renewable energy capacity expansion plans towards 2030. Achieving these goals would require continued investment, project financing and partnerships with businesses seeking to transition towards cleaner electricity.

The ₹262 crore financing for the Ilayangudi solar project therefore represents more than funding for a single solar facility. It also reflects a broader shift in India’s energy market, where industries, renewable energy developers, banks and international development finance institutions are increasingly working together.

As demand for clean electricity continues to grow, Tamil Nadu is expected to remain an important market for renewable energy investment. The 75 MWp Ilayangudi project demonstrates how open-access solar can support industrial decarbonisation while attracting institutional financing into India’s clean energy infrastructure.

The latest investment strengthens the foundation for further growth in the C&I renewable energy sector and highlights the increasing importance of well-financed, scalable solar projects in India’s energy transition.
